Why A New Small Business Needs To Market

When entrepreneurs first start a business, one of the first things they usually do is worry about managing the work loads they have. For example, a builder will concentrate on managing the jobs they have, were as a shop owner will prioritise setting up their shop and stock.

Both of these mindset are perfectly fine and will put them in good stead for the future because concentrating on the look and quality of their work should get some good word-by-mouth marketing, however, without conducting basic marketing practices they will not be able make their business achieve its full potential.

When I've worked with new businesses in the past, the main reason why they do not think about marketing straight away is either they do not know how to or they do not have time.

Below I'm going to talk about three things new businesses can do to make their marketing as easy as possible.

  1. Set up your social media account straight away.

Setting up social media channels is usually one of the last things small businesses do, usually because it takes a fair bit of time and can be a pain if you do not know what you're doing.

Setting up your social media channel straight away is actually one of the best ways to help a small business grow. Simply set up your channels and every day take a picture of the work you're doing and post the images online. This will not only make social media users aware of your business but it will also generate interest in the services or products you offer.

Top Tip - Always make sure you follow the social media channels best practices, for example, on Instagram and Twitter use has hashtags and when posting to Facebook always use a personalised voice when talking about your work.

2. Create a website

In this day and age it might seem like a normal thing to do but you'll be amazed at the amount of businesses that do not have a website yet. Having a website not only allows people to find your business but it can be used to show case your products and create a brand story. This is why it's important to get a website as soon as possible, even if it a free one like you can get from Wix.

3. Do not forget about traditional marketing

As I've mentioned, getting your business online via social media and a website is vitally important if you want your business to grow, however, if you combined digital marketing with traditional marketing your business can grow even larger.

One way these types of marketing can be effectively combined is through leaflets and promo codes. For example, if your business sells products you can create leaflets which you give to customers who buy your products. On these leaflets you can show case your best selling products and you can also include a promo code which customers can use on your website. This will not only get more people to go to your website and buy products online, but it will also help your website get found better on Google. This is because Google favours websites which have high traffic levels over those who have not that many visitors.

Top Tip - You do not have to be a wiz with Photoshop to make leaflet designs, there are lots of free websites you can use to make graphics. One of the best out there is one I personally use and that is called Canva.
